Memorial Day

Many people know that Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States and is a day of remembrance for those who have been killed while serving in the country’s armed forces. What many people don’t know is that Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day. The day originated after the Civil War to commemorate Union and Confederate soldiers who died. In the 20th century, the day was extended to honor all Americans who were killed while in the military service.

On Memorial Day Weekend, many people visit cemeteries and memorials to honor the fallen, and there’s no shortage of events and ceremonies to attend in the Atlanta area.

  • Salute to the Troops Lasershow Spectacular at Stone Mountain Park – all active and retired military personnel will receive a free adventure pass and immediate family members will save up to 30%
  • Roswell Remembers – the largest Memorial Day Ceremony in Georgia features music, a military ceremony, picnic on the grounds, and more on May 25th
  • City of Smyrna Memorial Day Ceremony at 20th Century Veterans Memorial – a memorial service to honor those who have sacrificed in defense of our nation on May 25th
  • Milton Memorial Day Ceremony – May 25th
  • Suwanee Red, White, Bluegrass & Bach event and concert on May 22nd
  • Memorial Day Flag Placement Ceremony – at Marietta National Cemetery on May 24
  • Military Timeline – at the Atlanta History Center on May 23 – travel the military timeline from the Revolutionary War to current conflicts and listen to veterans share their stories
  • Alpharetta Inaugural Memorial Day Tribute – at City Hall on May 25 – tribute to those who have died while in service of this country
  • Woodstock Memorial Day Ceremony – at The Park at City Center on May 25
  • Henry County Memorial Day Service – at the Veterans Wall of Honor on May 25
