Employee Spotlight: Brenda Turner

Brenda Turner, senior residential channel coordinator, is passionate about her job here at Gas South, as well as her role as a mentor for kids in our community.

In 2015, she started teaching and mentoring students every Sunday as a small group leader at Decatur City Church. Brenda has witnessed the eight students grow from preschoolers to second graders after spending her Sundays with them for the last three years. She teaches them weekly life lessons, listens to their stories with enthusiasm and is continuing to set an example for kids on what it means to serve others.

Volunteering as a small group leader is fulfilling Brenda’s urge to look beyond herself to do something greater. She started volunteering as a mentor at Woodson Park Academy –  a Title 1 school – in August 2017. Of the students enrolled at Woodson, 98 percent are eligible for free or reduced lunches, which is an indication of the need within the community.

“I’ll never forget the day I met my mentee,” Brenda said. “I walked into the school and they announced her name. Everyone started cheering and celebrating. It was like she won the lottery and it was just me meeting her for lunch.”

The program pairs volunteers with elementary students, and then volunteers are asked to visit the school once a month to spend an hour with the mentee. During that hour, volunteers teach the students a different virtue each month, and provide games and fun activities to do together.

“Obstacles we think will keep us from volunteering are not really obstacles at all,” Brenda added. “We often discredit what we have to give. The look on my mentee’s face when she sees me every month shows me that I’m a part of something special.”

Gas South employees are given eight hours of paid volunteer time a year, and since the volunteer program is eight sessions, Brenda is able to use those hours to give back to children in need. And for one little girl, that makes all the difference in the world.

Putting our Purpose into Action.

A couple months ago, we talked about our company’s purpose: Be a Fuel for Good, and we’ve been very busy since then, so here’s an update on what we’ve been up to!

Our goal is to give back more than a million dollars by 2020 which we’re doing by giving back 5% of our profits to help children in need. By focusing on nonprofits, startups and sponsorships who share our passion for supporting local families, we believe we can make the biggest impact in our community.

Here are a few examples of the ways we’ve been putting our time, talent and financial contributions into action:

  • In 2017, Gas South donated more than $411,000 to our community partners.
  • During December, 38 employees volunteered in the community (out of a total of more than 200).
  • Gas South supplied heating assistance to more than 86 families in need this winter.
  • Employees raised more than $700 for the Salvation Army by ringing the Kettle Bells.
  • In partnership with the Smyrna Police Department, Gas South sent 12 Cobb County kids shopping for Christmas gifts.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Being a fuel for good is about building partnerships large and small. Large partnerships like the Salvation Army, United Way, Junior Achievement, Must Ministries, Action Ministries and Title 1 Schools. And smaller partnerships like Pebbletossers and the Kell Robotics Team.

As Gas South enters its 12th year, everything we’ve done to this point has been about being a fuel for good. It’s part of the DNA of the people who make up this company. And it has the potential to grow.

For instance, Pebbletossers focuses on giving children volunteer opportunities to show them what it means to serve others. This relationship has the potential to become a movement in the sense that we’re not just supporting kids financially, we’re encouraging them to be a part of something bigger—something that will benefit them throughout their lives as well as the community.

It takes an army to make an impact. So when we talk about giving 5% of our profits back to our community, it’s not just a corporate check; it’s a corporate check with an army of volunteers behind it.

I’m incredibly proud of our employees, leadership and partners for working every day to make a difference in people’s lives. We want our customers to know that by being a customer, you’re helping make a difference too.

In October 2016, Gas South established its Great Place to Work (GPTW) Team to help foster that sense of trust by uncovering meaningful insights and making positive changes to create a better overall employee experience.

The goal of the team is to understand what’s most important to our coworkers so that working at the company is an amazing endeavor for employees every day – and to set the standard for providing a productive and fulfilling company culture.

After more than a year of combined effort, the team has enhanced the flex/telecommute policy, modified work shifts for the Customer Care Center Reps, improved the tuition assistance policy, inspired one another through a companywide recognition program, and created unparalleled career development activities.

By continually launching new purpose-driven initiatives and improvements, Gas South’s GPTW Team is proud to help the company continue to lead the way in cultivating a truly outstanding work environment.

Investing in your Employees

Setting yourself apart in a competitive job market and keeping employees engaged is not an easy task – but it’s something my team does every day. Growing from a company of 50 employees 11 years ago, to more than 230 people, creates challenges and opportunities but we’re taking it head-on.

The team of six has made some substantial changes in the past year –introduction of a $15 minimum wage, creation of a formalized corporate wellness program, revamping the internal learning management system and updating the attendance policy to allow more flexibility.

One area where we have focused is creating more programs and initiatives to inspire and engage employees. We launched Gas South University, an internal learning management system, to improve competency-based training opportunities for all employees. It’s important for us to offer training and classes to all employees, especially the Customer Care agents. They are the voice and ears of the company – if they aren’t happy doing their job, we can’t provide an amazing customer experience.

 

I’m also proud that we recently received a Bronze Stevie Award in the 2017 American Business Awards in the HR Department of the Year category.

Gas South Family Fun Day 2016

Gas South employees, family members and friends turned out to our annual Family Fun Day at Six Flags, despite the record high temperatures! Every year we invite employees to get together outside the office to have some fun, and to thank them for all the hard work and time they put forth during the year. It’s also a great opportunity to thank our family members for their support of us each and every day.

This year 347 people attended Family Fun Day!

We love being able to meet and hang out with everyone’s families! Having some down time, riding roller coaster rides and face painting really brings a group together. And did we mention food?

Employees and guests were given free tickets to Six Flags all day and then everyone met in the reserved pavilion for a picnic where we heard from Gas South’s President and CEO, Kevin Greiner, as he took time to thank employees and guests.

 

It was a great day and fun was had by all! We’re already looking forward to next year!
